It is my philosophy that a teacher should create a learning environment where students are able to grow and inquire about the world around them. As a teacher my objective is to help students understand the core content of the course, develop critical thinking skills, and have the ability to analyze and synthesis new ideas from materials. If a student is can embrace these skills, then they will be able to tackle the complex concerns of our society and environment.

Core content is the main focus of every lesson. It drives the instruction. It is vital that a teacher utilizes a variety of methods to present the core content to the students. This will help all students grasp the main idea to their fullest potential. The instruction needs to draw upon the students' prior knowledge and be relevant to their lives. When a teacher can make the core content relevant then students will be motivated to learn. When students connect the core content to prior knowledge then they can create a mental structure to organize the material. As students make this cognitive bridge they are able to retain and use the core content in and outside of school.

Critical thinking is an active systematic way of thinking. A good critical thinker will use their observations and experiences to reason, reflect and communicate about their ideas. When students think critically they can argue and provide reasoning for what they are thinking. When students think critically then they can analyze information to synthesize new ideas. This is when real learning can occur. Critical thinking is a skill that needs to be developed by the student through modeling, rehearsing and coaching by the teacher. It is imperative that students become critical thinkers. Having this ability will help them not only in school but more importantly as the graduate and become productive members of our society.

As an educator my philosophy has three main goals. One is to open the students’ eyes and minds to the exciting and ever changing world that surrounds them, so they have the desire to be lifelong learners. I also want to create instructional opportunities that connect to their prior knowledge and are relevant and challenging. This will help students think critically and synthesize new ideas from their old ones. Last, but not least, I will be a role model to my students. I plan to model good questioning strategies so that my students will be truly engaged in the learning process. I will incorporate these goals into my every day instruction as a formula for my students’ success.
